  1. Blu-Ray Disc (BD) is essentially the next generation of optical disc, developed by sony. It has the same diametre as a dvd does, but BDs use a blue lazer, rather than a red one to read the data on the disc. blue lazers have a smaller wavelenght, allowing them to compact the data more closely together on a BD allowing more space. DVDs hav a size of upto about 9.4GB, thats maximum, usually its about 4.7GB.

Bluray can store a minimum of 25GB and a maximum of 50GB! That allows for high definition 1080p video and highdef 7.1 surround sound.

Sony also use it for games on their amamzing Playstation 3 system. The most powerful console yet. All of its games use bluray, allowing them to put more into their games and fit high definition gameplay on more easier, rather than compressing it. XBOX 360 still uses DVDs on its games, meaning they have to compress the data to the max to fir hd stuff on there.

Howe ver ps3 exclusive games, dont have to worry about that coz they have bluray.

Ratchet and clank tols of destruction for example, only available on ps3, uses a massive 23GB on the bd. Impossibl to fit on a dvd.

bluray though, does have a competitor, hd dvd (high density digital versatile disc). Which is similar, but doesnt really have as amuch stoarage space.

currrently BD is winning the format war, with more supporters thatn HDDVD, only time will tell.

  2. well i think it is a like dvd player or some kind of technology

  3. Blu-Ray is similar to dvd in the fact that the discs look the same, but Blu-Ray is much different than dvd in terms of picture and sound quality. DVD has an image resolution of 720x480 (345600 pixels) while Blu-Ray has an image resolution of 1920x1080 (2073600 pixels) so Blu-Ray has an image resolution 6 times higher than that of DVD. The difference is not just in the number of pixels on the screen, the image is sharper, colors are deeper and brighter and there is much more detail than with standard DVD.

As far as the sound goes Blu-Ray uses newer surround sound formats than DVD. With DVD you have Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 or 6.1 which sound great, but on Blu-Ray you have Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master which are both lossless audio formats....what does this mean, well instead of compressed Dolby and DTS on DVD which takes away some of the sound quality, the lossless formats as well as PCM uncompressed sound brings us sound quality that is as good as the master recordings.

I know this is a lot of info to throw at you, but at least if someone asks you what Blu-Ray is you will be able to educate them rather than just say it's a high definition version of dvd.

  4. Blu-Ray is a disk format developed by Sony (as well as others), it is currently competing with HD-DVD (developed by Toshiba and others) to be the next standard in digital video (what DVD is to us now)

So basically, with enough support in the future Blu-ray will be what DVDs are to us today.

  5. basically it's laser made of blue light.. which has a shorter wavelength than the usual red lasers used in DVD and CD players. This means it can read more compacted information so you can store more information on a "Blu-ray" disc.

  6. It's essentially the next step up from a DVD....it's a disc that movies come on, that is compatible with hi def TV....more clarity, better sound, etc than DVDs

  7. Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.
