  1. Actually, all DVD players are laser devices. Normal DVDs use red lasers and Bluray players use near-blue lasers. Bluray will not play on regular DVD players because the read area of the disk is too tiny for red lasers to see.

Bluray is for High Definition video, which is a lot more data intensive than regular video. DVDs have the data capacity for a movie in standard definition but you need Bluray for the extreme requirements of HDTV.

The reason Bluray disks can hold more data is because the ones and zeros on the surface can be smaller. They can be smaller because the blue lasers can be focused tighter than red lasers. This is due to the shorter wavelenght of blue vs. red.

I know that's probably too much information, but that's what's up.

  2. A blu-ray disk is a high definition video disk.  The reason why it is called blu ray is probably due to the fact that you need a blue colored LED in order to read the disk.  Normal DVD players do not have this blue LED so they cannot play blu-ray disks.

  3. Blu ray disk gets it name from the laser that "burns" the images on the disk, and the laser that reads them. blue has a shorter wavelength than red which is used on others, allowing more precision when "reading" the disc. It allows for a very high compression rate, i.e. high def, allowing more information to be put on the disk, approx 5x a standard DVD (10X for a dual layered blu ray disc).

  4. bluray discs are high definition dvds(not to be confused with hd-dvd). and they dont work on normal dvd players
