  1. It all depends. I went to an all female boarding school with the richest snobbest girls. I still have emotional problems due to that place. I went there from the ages of 14 to 18. The problems is that you have no privacy. Your forced to eat and sleep and live with other girls. You have to be in at a certain time and they coddle you like kids. You can't have any time on your own. They pile you up in a room of 3 other girls in your first year. That age is the most vulnerable for girls. That is when you need the support of your family the most. I wasn't the only one with a problem there. When I was there I abused cough syrup EVERYDAY at lunch and no one noticed. I also smuggled in alcohol, was bullemic, anorexic, self mutalistic, and suicidal. I tried to commit suicide with sleeping pills twice but no one noticed. they thought I was just very sleepy. Now at the age of 26 I regret going there. But I went there to escape the divorce of my family. It was the lesser of the two evils. I still have nightmares of that place and have some maturity issues due to the fact that I'm still trapped psychologically there. My co-woker says that he will never send his daughters to a boarding school since all the women who did go were all messed up. He said that I was the most normal though I do have many issues. Girls also tend to pms at the same time. If you live with a female for a while you get your period at the same time therefore causing wars every month. It's just nature, it's to compete with other females for males.

However, for males it's different. You feel more territorial and more independent from your family. It's a good way to grow up. My older brother went to boarding school and he's doing well. He still misses that place at the age of 33. Met really close friends and they are all excelling in their career since it made them grow into men earlier. It's like sending a boy off to hunt with the pack. For females it's different. I knew many girls who were deathly anorexic, and I know many girls who committed suicide there. So basically for females, don't go. For men, it's like the military and makes them into men.

    I hope this helps.

  2. I'm sorry, but the first two answers have really got it wrong with boarding school. I know hundreds who have been and are going to boarding school around the world and very, very few consider their time in boarding school a bad experience. I'm very sorry, and I mean no offense whatsoever to the two people who answered above, but in my experience, it is most often the person's own problems that cause the bad experience, and not the actions or issues of others. I did have a few problems: with a few stubborn teachers, with a few of the school's policies, etc, but at no time did I experience something remotely terrible. Little problems and issues will always occur, but these are easily fixable and even easier to forget. But big problems and big issues are extremely rare, and like I said before, usually the person's own fault. As long as you go to a good, education-oriented boarding school, the chance of you having a bad time is very slim. And I dislike the portrayal of boarding schools as full of "s****. rich kids" immensely. That's a very outdated stereotype. Somewhat true in the 80s and 90s, but not so now. You will find down-to-Earth kids in most boarding schools today, rich or poor.

If you're still interested in going (and I don't think it would be easy to consider it after reading those answers), I suggest applying to schools with an international student body, education-oriented (New England is best for this), and schools that are established with clear histories. Be cautious towards newer boarding schools with no track record or older schools with shady records. Boarding school is great if you're willing to put a little effort in to having a great time AND making good grades, then you'll have the time of your life. I know I did, and so did many, many others. Best of luck.

    In reference to your questions:

Can you go shopping? If the boarding school is located relatively close to a town or city then most students will go on Saturday or Sunday.

can you go out? On the weekends.

What can you do on your free time? From my experience, there is rarely "free time" during the weekdays, but this was never a bad thing, it makes the week go by much,  much faster.

Do we get any free time? During the weekdays it may be a little limited, that is time during the day when you can do whatever you want. But during the weekend, at most boarding schools at least, its mostly free time.

I am a girl, so can you wear makeup or do they have weird rules? Unless it is an especially strict or religious school, and there aren't too many of these left, makeup is allowed.

Can boys and girls hang out together? You will of course be separated by different boarding houses, obviously. And you may possibly eat in different dining rooms and do sports separately. But besides that, you can be with members of the opposite s*x whenever.

Are the classes hard? As long as you are an organized person and know how to stay on top of things, it will rarely be hard.

  3. it is very bad and stressful
