  1. Like all big cities, it has it's problem areas, but I've lived here for ten years and find it great; friendly people, vibrant city, lots of lovely historic buildings. Clifton, where I live, tends to be the student quarter, and is very expensive, I'm afraid!

    Come on down, me babber!

  2. Horrible to work in.

I live a few miles outside, and as I see the green space when I am going home I breath a sigh of relief.

  3. it is indeed a long way from Yorkshire

  4. Bristol hosts the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England so it's a great student place.

Both Uni's have a good reputation, particularly in Law.

All the student accommodation, both Halls and student houses are typical of their kind.

The city has its bad areas, like any other large town, but they are easy to avoid. You will soon be told where Not to go. It also has some great areas.

The rentable student houses are usually in 'shabby' but very safe areas that are convenient for the Centre, shopping, great pubs and night life. You can also get to Uni from them.

You would have to be in the devil's really bad books if you end up in a student house in a bad area.

Of course, being south of Birmingham, the local beer is very good. Most real-ale pubs don't use sparkers on their pumps so you get a full pint of ale, not something that's 20% air (which is a cheat).

The people are generally friendly (except in the places to avoid) but the bus service is probably not as good as you're used to.

If you get the train out into the countryside, especially into Somerset,  you'll find it very attractive but in a much softer and warmer way than Yorkshire. The country pubs are mostly exellent.

  5. I wasn't there as a student, but trained for my job there. Accommodation is quite expensive, the night-life is good. There are lots of things to do, but it depends on what your interests are. There is a lot to see in the city, and I found the people friendly. For example, if you are waiting to cross the road where there is no crossing, drivers will stop their cars to wave you across.

  6. Great,

  7. As a driver who has been driving through Bristol for 16 years, STAY AWAY, it is a cack hole!

  8. For a student, I reckon Bristol is a pretty safe bet. The city is varied and fun, and there's plenty of great bars, pubs and clubs.

As for the people, well I'm personally not all that enamoured by native Bristolians (they seem quite cliquey and insular, I prefer Geordies, Scousers, Brummies etc), but as a student you'll probably find you spend most of your time surrounded by other students anyway, so it won't be an issue.

Costs? So-so. Bristol isn't the very cheapest place in the world, but it's far from the most expensive either. For a city I'd say it's about average.

Incidentally, Bristol University is considered relatively 'posh', hence the answerer above mentioning that Clifton (an expensive part of town) is thought of as a student-y area. If you go down that road, you will find Bristol expensive! The University of Western England is a lot more down-to earth.
