the other answer is correct, but left out one point.

buffing compound is an abrasive compound, like sand, but much finer. It can eliminate a scratch by, basically, sanding it away.

Be careful that you use the proper grade, and progress to finer and finer grades to remove the scratches caused by the first stage.

Misapplied, it will dull your finish.
