  1. It literally means the measurement of heat (Etymology: Caloric-heat,  -metry:measurement) it deals with the absorption or transfer of heat as well as the chemical processes involved.


  2. Literally, it's the process of measuring heat.  Practically, it's a lab technique to determine the amount of heat produced when a reaction occurs.  Typically you take something like a big Thermos with a thermometer sticking out of it, conduct some sort of reaction, and look at the change in reading on the thermometer.  Then it's possible to figure out how much energy was given off during the reaction.
