  2. When the racecourse does not have a name plate for the jockey riding. His name is written in chalk on a blank name plate.That is a chalk jockey.

    it might be a betting counter person.. in the old days they wrote the horses odds in chalk... i dunno.

A chalk jockey is a jockey who does not get many rides so that when his name goes up on the number board he does not have a ready painted name panel and has to have his name written on a blank panel in chalk - this practice has probably died out now but may occur at some jump meetings when there is an amateur race or an apprentice race.  Number boards may even have died out lately, as I have not been to the races for a few years now.   Anyway there is no need for any further speculation as I have told you what it is.

    is on the post time favorite. example..r. baze..99% of his wins

    comes on the favorite...and the word chalk comes from the

    old days when they kept the odds on a chalk board, when a

    horse was being bet alot, they had to keep eraseing the odds. and

    that made them use a lot of chalk....
