What is cheese whey?

This may sound like a silly question, but there is a wall behind my house which is falling down. I need to make about 50 mud bricks to rebuild it, and I read that cheese whey can make it more water repellent. What I need to know is, what is cheese whey (I know nothing about cheese...hate the stuff) and how to I obtain it?

  1. CHEESE-WHEY is an "All Dairy" nutrient-rich animal feed ingredient that provides highly digestible nutrients in combination with all the benefits of a natural cheese taste and aroma.  Protein, lysine and lactose levels in CHEESE-WHEY are comparable to dried whey, while fat and energy values are superior.  The palatability and performance benefits of IIC cheese products have been proven in several swine nursery and pet food trials.  CHEESE-WHEY is an excellent ingredient for swine starter diets, pet foods, and aquaculture feeds where nutrient quality and improved palatability are critical.

I don't  know why this is going on your wall.

  2. It is a by product from making cheese.  It is a white watery liquid that looks like milk that has been thinned with 75% water added.   Hogs love it.  I don't know about a benafit to your needs though.

  3. It is the liquid that is stained away from the solids(curds) when cheese is made. That doesn't make any sense to me, but I may be wrong.

  4. Cheese factory.

Cheese whey is also known as curd.  It is in the early stages of becoming cheese.  These rubbery pieces will still need the excess moisture pressed out of the curds to become cheese.

Utilizing curd for a wall would not be feasible, it will still mold and is attractive as food for rodents and insects.  Check into alternative moisture proofing methods.

  5. Hmm. A simple mixture of protein and lipid is water-repellent, but it's inherently unstable and not resistant to deterioration by oxidation or bacterial action. If I were you I'd be thinking about visiting my local retail outlet for building materials and/or proprietary weatherproofing agents before you, uh, cut the cheese.
