  1. Ok When you remove a cavity you can do it chemically or mechanically... You alwais start mechanically. You can finish chemically if you do not want to dig deeper in the tooth and hit the nerve.

    You remove the caries mechanically because its a big hole filled with soft remains of dissolved tooth particles. You take that out. When it get harder (deeper), you can choose - because you suspect the nerve to be near - to let some carie there and put a chemical stuff on it (calcium hydroxide, eugenol zinc oxide, fluoride, ozone, etc).. Anything that would kill the remaining bacterias and thus stop the cavitie from continuing its formation.
