I know that China is Communist but is doesn't seem that way at all. They are leaning more towards the west and Capitalism. I mean they even have McDonalds there...

They are also known as the Peoples Republic of China. But a Republic is a government thats rules with law. (A democracy is by the people, oligarchy -- ruled by few, etc...etc...) But communism is different than a republic, so why do they call themselves a republic?

So, to slim this question down to the basics:

Why is China considered communist?

Why do they call themselves a republic?

What is China's actual government?

Also, correct me if I was wrong in anything I said. I believe I have a good understanding on how to differentiate between types of government but I could always wrong.

  1. "People's Republic" indicates a communist government.  Hence, the official name for North Korea is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.  Also, China is the "People's Republic of China."

But you are correct that China is not actually communist anymore.  It is in fact a capitalist nation.

  2. China has a corrupt republic, (elect officials to represent), and they recently are starting to call themselves a capitalist nation.  It is funny though that China and Russia, two recent communist nations are becoming the symbols of a nation run by money

  3. Communism is supposed to be the political party for the people, helping out the laborers, making sure they're not exploited. However, it is used just as a way for someone to get into power and form a dictatorship. Communism is actually anti-fascism, but it is a weak and easilly exploited system. It uses the title "republic" to trick its people into thinking it actually is a republic, when it is, in fact, a dictatorship. Most of the people know this however. And the USSR got a McDonalds as one of the last moments of being the USSR before it collapsed. But now, I do believe, it's once again a dictatorship. Thanks, PUTIN.

  4. They just realized how much better capitalism is, so now they are slowly changing.

I'm sure that if you lived there, then you would agree that it is a Communist run country.
