  1. A classmarks scheme is used to arrange stock by subject on the shelves. Classmark schemes may differ between branches. Some branches have more than one classmark sequence of shelves, such as Oversize, Reference and Serial (for journal type material). Notices outlining the classmark scheme are available in each branch.

        * Branch libraries contains details of the classmarks scheme and arrangement of stock in a particular branch

        * Library Catalogue  has details on classmarks of printed books in all the branch libraries (under Location on the Holdings page).

        * Browse the Library Catalogue by classmark to find printed books on a particular subject.

Please note: Classmark browse will only work for the following libraries: Arts & Social Sciences, Education, Queens, Wills and Veterinary Science.

        * MetaLib allows you to search our catalogues for print and electronic resources in one search.

        * UoB Library Catalogues cross-search on MetaLib allows you to search our catalogues for print and ebooks in one search.

  2. Library's use one of several available classifications schemes, usually library of congress or dewey.  Most library schools will favor one but teach both.
