  1. The process of condensation of water vapour into water droplets (leading to formation of clouds) requires what is called condensation nuclei which are tiny dust particles, salt particles, smoke particles.tiny droplets of sulphuric acid etc. These are readily available in the atmosphere. If you artificially introduce more such condensation nuclei in the atmosphere, there is a chance of increasing the rainfall amount. This concept has lead to the idea of cloud seeding.Silver iodide, dry ice(frozen CO2) and salt are thus  used for seeding the air to encourage cloud formation and consequent rainfall.

  2. Cloud seeding is when they put chemicals in the clouds (it may just be dust they use, I am not sure) to make it rain.  It makes the water drops in the clouds stick to the particles the put in there, and that makes them heavy and it makes them rain.  They have done this in China before during droughts.  Not sure if it was ever used in the US, or what the ecological repercussions are.

  3. They fly a plane up into the clouds an disperse either dry ice or silver iodide into the cloud to make it rain:-)
