It is one of the earliest concerns of Sociology, studies were first started during the French Revolution. Intellects wanted to understand what factors were present when a crowd turned from a passive group to a riotous mob.

Today it includes studies of the Kumba Mela, and organized social movements like Green Peace, PETA and others.

Collective behavior might also be defined as action which is neither conforming (in which actors follow prevailing norms) nor deviant (in which actors violate those norms). Collective behavior, a third form of action, takes place when norms are absent or unclear, or when they contradict each other. Scholars have devoted far less attention to collective behavior than they have to either conformity or deviance.

Social movements are a type of group action. They are large informal groupings of individuals and/or organizations focused on specific political or social issues, in other words, on carrying out, resisting or undoing a social change.
