Collision coverage is a coverage that covers a car.

in the event the car is damaged, destroyed if it "collides" with another car, or object.  ie, runs into a tree, fence, animal, etc.  Doesn't really matter whose fault it is.

Similar to that is comprehensive coverage which cover a car in the event of a fire, flood, theft, vandalism, etc.  In other words, everything - other than collision.

There are two types of insurance on your car which cover damage to your car. Collision and comprehensive. Collision covers damage to your car caused by you colliding your car into another car or or other object or from another vehicle colliding into your car. Comprehensive covers everything else that isn't excluded on the policy. A tree falls on your car, your car is stolen, your car is struck by lightning, somebody vandalizes your car, etc.

A third type of coverage is liability which protects you against suits from causing property damage or bodily injury to others from driving your car. Hitting a pedestrian or hitting another car causing damage to that car and bodily injury to its occupants.
