  1. Simple answer:    1.5Mbs or > (the faster the better)

    Complex answer:

Generally speaking, anything faster than dial-up service (>56Kbs) can be considered broadband.  But more realistically, >128Kbs is considered broadband.  Most companies promote 256/128Kbs as "LiteSpeed" and 1.5Mbs or greater as HighSpeed.

I subscribe to numerous VoIP services with 256/128Kbs LiteSpeed service using the Linksys PAP2T ATA ... - so it is possible, but not optimal (I'm not recommending most people do this).  For reliable high quality VoIP quality, most people will want to use 1.5Mbs (or higher) service.

But what is minimum bandwidth required for VoIP is a complex issue requiring complex answers - (many factors involved).  But in a nutshell, it is possible to use VoIP satisfactorily with speeds as low as 56Kbs or less.

But for "home phone replacement VoIP service", you really want at least 1.5Mbs highspeed service.

  2. DSL or CABLE internet

yeah 1.5mb is fast enough for the download speed

    you should have 384/256k upload

you should have at least 200k upload and download for vonage to be clear

note: your internet speed can slow down while talking on the phone

  3. First of all, I would NOT recommend Vonage VOIP service. You need at least DSL or Cable/FIOS broadband for good service. I don't like ANY VOIP services. They occasionally freeze up, you have to call customer support, (on some other phone service), when the power goes down, you do not have service. Regular phone lines have battery backup, so a wired phone will still work. (And so will your LAPTOP in a power failure!!!) Have heard a lot of horror stories on VOIP, but some love it. Verizon FIOS also comes with a battery backup.
