  1. Anything that you are going to bring or wear during hiking is considered hiking gears.

http://twiverse.com. check this site for hiking gears.

  2. Shoes or boots suitable for the terrain you will be hiking. These need to be sturdy, offer arch and ankle support, and may or may not be insulated depending on the weather.

Some sort of water container that can be "worn". I use a small f***y pack that has two holders for quart size containers. It straps around my waist and is easy to carry along.

A hiking stick or pole can also be very useful in helping you keep your balance while hiking rough or steep ground.

Sun protection in the form of a hat and sunscreen.

Insect repellent!!! You never know when you will find that swarm of mosquitoes.

A day pack may also be useful. Some places I hike start off very cool in the morning and  heat up dramatically during the day. With a day pack, I can bring food and have a place to stash the excess layers of clothing as the day heats up.

When thinking of things you need for hiking, keep in mind the local weather and terrain.
