Not long ago a new WR was set in the 100m athletics event. It was 9.72 seconds.I can still remember when it was 9.86.

I want to know what you consider to be an unsurpassable time.

  1. 9.00

  2. There is a lot of talk about this and of the scientists that study, none want to set a time.  The reason being is that as technology improves and training techniques improve so will the times.

9.00 is a good guess for the next 10 years, but I would say that it will be lowered past that.  Remember, the 4 minute mile was a barrier that was supposed to be impossible and now High School athletes can beat that.

One area of research that is very promising is in the area of stopping the calcium leaks in the cells.  This is the fatiguing factor in anaerobic activities.  If they could develop something that could stop that just imagine what the running times could be.

Another area is looking at training at younger ages.  There is some research out there that suggests that babies are born entirely of fast twitch muscles and through environment, they develop slow twitch.  We know that it is basically a one way track. Imagine if we knew that we had a Usain Bolt as a baby and trained him from a kid.  Also, he is so tall that he proved that you can have a tall sprinter which suggests a reevaluation of training.  Usually someone that tall would not even be put in the hundred meter since he is at a disadvantage because of muscle lengths.  I see 9.00 being broken in my lifetime. . .

If you look at the history of the world record, it goes down about a .1 of a second every ten years.  With advancements this should be even faster.  I remember when they said that Ben Johnson's time was impossible without steroids.  Now several people have broken that.

    Keep up the discussion!

  3. Unless we start genetically modifying babies there's no reason to suppose we'll see 9.5 broken at all, nevermind 9 seconds. Ben Johnson ran 9.79 seconds in Seoul in 1988 and he was celebrating before he even crossed the line. If he had run through the line his time would probably have been around 9.75, so 100m best performances have barely improved at all in 20 years.

  4. well 100 yrs ago the rcord was 10.4

    now its 9.7

so in 100 it shuld be 9.00

  5. Yeah 9 seconds I think!!!

  6. 9 seconds, but i think Tyson g*y will get close to it

  7. 9.00 secs I won't live to see a man break that.
