depends upon your definition of cool - but the hoxton / shoreditch area has been one of the coolest places in London over recent years, though a lot of people think that its had its day now.

Bethnal Green is seen as an up and coming area - a little further east of hoxton and so has lapped up the arty overspill as hoxton and shoreditch have become increasingly gentrified.

Hard to beat Old Compton St in Soho. Sit out in front of Bar Italia and watch the world go by. Other lounges and venues come and go, but there will always be a Soho.

I work there and live in Camden, and I think they're the two coolest parts of the city - but of course it depends on what you're into, what you'd define as cool.
