  1. it means both safties play zone. in most other systems the strong safety joins the line to chase the rusher or QB - and the free safety helps cover the pass

  2. A cover 2 defense is a defense built to stop the pass. The down lineman stop the run gaps, the linebackers are to watch for the run, and than help cover the underneath receivers-backs. It is called the cover 2 because you have your 2 safetys who each cover half the field, in a zone coverage-not man to man. If it was a cover 3 , there would be three defensive backs each covering 1/3 the field. If it were a cover 4, there would be 4 backs covering 1/4 the field. In a cover 2 defense, obviously the 2 safetys have alot of ground to cover and have to be quick.

  3. But since the basic formation in the CFL calls for 5 defensive backs (2 corners, 2 halfbacks, and 1 safety), I would say that the 2 HBs drop into zone (each covering half the field) and the safety would be in either man-to-man coverage or coming on a blitz.

For any Americans answering this question, we only have 1 safety in the Canadian game. ;-)
