The concepts covered by the term "critical pedagogy" arise from the work and writings of Pablo Freire, a Brazilian educator who revolutionized the way we think about education.  The word "critical" here means to teach students how to look at everything with a critical mind.  Freire and his followers believe that teaching has been a tool of oppressors for so many centuries that teachers must make a concentrated effort to make their work an act of empowerment rather than oppression.  Wikipedia has an excellent article which I cite below.
