  1. Modern cars are made so that impact causes them to crumple in places other than the passenger area (like the hood and trunk).  With older cars, if you hit something hard enough, the engine (or at least the steering column) would end up in the passenger area and kill people there.  The idea is to have a bubble of the car that won't be crushed, so if you can survive the impact, there will be less chance of being crushed by the car.

  2. Auto Safety Features

Crumple zones are one of the most underrated safety features in modern vehicles.

Automotive Engineers have designed the body parts of a vehicle to crumple in predetermined patterns to absorb the energy from a crash's impact and maintain the integrity of the passenger compartment, keeping the driver and passengers safer.

  3. The crumple zone is a part of the car that is intended to protect the occupants of the vehicle incase of a collision. When a car crashes at high speeds, the entire force of the impact is tremendous, being in a car crash of 50 km/hr is like suffering a 6 storey fall onto a cement surface(without the crumple zone).now what the crumple zone does is that it absorbs this tremendous energy and reduces the energy produced from the crash before it reaches the occupants seated in the car cabin. Now the occupants instead of a 6 storey fall onto a cement surface experience a much milder force like that  of falling out of the bed(as the crumple zone present absorbs much of this force and gets completely damaged and deformed to save the humans inside the car).Hope my analogies helped you understand what exactly the crumple zones are for. When u look at a car don't judge its protections by how less damaged in an accident,I know this sounds weird but the more a car gets damaged&deformed in an accident the safer are the passenger traveling in it.Its either the car that should get deformed in a crash or the occupants,so choose a car with a more deforming crumple zone, the safest car in this terms is the hyundai getz.
