Lots.  Most energy is thermal in nature.  Cars combustion is thermal.  Power plants run on thermal energy.  But I don't think that's what you are actually asking.

Advances in thermal energy use are with geothermal captures of heat from the ground.  If you regard solar energy as thermal energy then there is a ton going on with that field as well.
