The 1st link summarizes DVD reviews and concludes that in that price range the Phillips DVP5960 is the best bet ... although it's 1080i (not 1080p) it won't matter since any good 1080p display will deinterlace and give you 1080p, and if you only have a 1080i display it won't matter.

If you can find one for the price (they were selling for under $100 until recently) the Toshiba HD-A2 or A3 make an excellent upconverting player as well (probably better than the Phillips).

There isn't any Upconvert DVD player that makes your regular DVDs 1080p.  In other words it doesn't really make a regular DVD into 1080p resolution, it only adds artificial lines of resolution to give it a sharper image.
