  1. Yes. You do need a bank account.

A debit card is a card that works sort of like a check: You put money in your bank account. Then when you want to buy something with your debit card, you swipe it at the register. Whatever the amount of your purchase is, is automatically taken out of your bank account right then and paid to the store for your purchase.

An ATM is an "automatic teller machine.' An ATM card is what you use to interact with it. It works just like going to the counter of the bank, only you have a card you swipe and/or a code. You push buttons instead of talking to a live person. You must have a bank account to use the ATM. When you request (by pushing the buttons) a certain amount of money, the machine takes that much money out of your bank account and you get it at the machine (ATM) in cash.

If you use either of these cards, you need to realize that the only money you get is what you put in your bank account. And mostly, you need to write down how much you take out every single time--immediately when you take it out, so you won't lose track--because the money goes out a lot faster than you think you are taking it.

  2. Yes you need a bank account. A debit card is connected to your savings account (ie not credit account...your money, not the bank's). You use your debit card at the atm (automatic teller machine) to withdraw your money from your savings account.

Go to your bank and ask them to explain it fully to you and show you how to use it.

  3. When  you  open  a  account they ask if you want  a  debit card and  checks  or  just  the  card.  The  card can be used  for purchases with  a  pin #  or  signing  a  slip. Atm  is  the  machine  to  get money out   usually located  at  service  stations  and  malls. At banks if it is  their account  usually no  charge to your  account.  But  if  another chain bank  a  charge  will be  deducted from  balance.  However  if lost  it  may be used fraud purchase. Another  new  thing is  a  card service  sold  by  Wal  Mart  Visa basically like  a account  without a  bank.  If you keep over certain  amount deposit on  card there is  no monthly fee. I  have  used  mine at  several  stores  and  on line.  You refill or  add on it at  Wal Mart,  it is  called green dot. You can check balance on line.

  4. Basically free money.  You just swipe the card and get stuff, if you know what I mean. :)

  5. are you from a different planet?

  6. There are some instances where you don't actually need a bank account. There are some places where you can just get an atm/debit card. Such as the Cash Pass master card. There are also cards that you can get at retailers such as Wal-Mart. You just put the money you earn from work or other sources on the card and you can use it to make purchases with anywhere the visa and or mastercard logo is accepted. (Obviously so long as you have the money on your card) You can also use it to withdraw cash from an ATM machine. I should not that the vast majority of ATM/Debt cards are issued by banks. The money then obviously comes from your checking account in this case.
