  1. weight = mass X gravity

  2. Weight is a force that results from the action of gravity on matter

  3. weight is the name for the force acting on a mass due to a gravitational field, usually talked about when that mass is in the gravitational field of a planet or something similar like the moon.

    we can use F = mg,

    where m is the mass in question, and g is the acceleration due to the gravitational field, which decreases as you get further from the planet (so when people give values for g for a planet they mean g at the surface of the planet, as opposed to g at some height above the surface).

    more generally, for the gravitational force between any two objects with mass:

    F = GMm / r^2

    where:

    F = force (Weight) between two objects with mass.

    G= gravitational constant (6.67x10^-11 m^3 kg^-1 s^-2)

    M = mass of one object

    m = mass of another object

    r = radius (distance between the two objects)
