  1. The Kentucky Derby is the most famous race in horse racing.  It's also the first in a three-race series that makes up the Triple Crown (the other two are the Preakness and Belmont stakes).  In order to win the "Triple Crown", a horse must win all three races.

The Derby is only for three-year-olds, and its countepart is the Kentucky Oaks, which is for three-year-old fillies (female horses).

The winner of the Derby is guaranteed entry into the Preakness and Belmost, wins $2 million and a blanket of roses, making it the "Run for the Roses".

It's really a big deal in Louisville.  The whole town goes Derby-crazy for the two weeks leading up to Oaks and Derby.  This year, the Queen of England is attending the Derby for the first time.

It takes place at legendary racetrack Churchill Downs.

  2. It's the day the Kentucky Derby horse race is held. The Kentucky Derby is kind of the horse version of the Indy 500.

  3. Derby day refers to the Kentucky Derby that is run each year on the first Saturday of May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. It is a horse race, a stakes race to be exact, and the first of the three races which make up what is known as the Triple Crown in Thoroughbred racing. The Derby is the most famous of the Triple Crown races, but it is not the oldest- that honor goes to the Belmont Stakes, the last of the 3 races. The Derby, like all the Triple Crown races, is limited to horses that have reached their third birthday and who have won a certain amount of money in the preparatory races that precede the series. The Derby is open to both males and females, though only 3 fillies ( female horses under age 4) have ever won the Derby. Oklahoma has tracks- and those tracks have similcasting on Derby day- so come out and watch the race on Saturday if you can. You'll love it- most people who see the race usually do.

  4. Go ahead and ask her. If you ask a girl from Louisville what Derby Day is, and she remains  your friend, you have a true friend there.

  5. An event since 1875, and the first jewel in the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred horseracing,
