I love Indian and Pakistani food and not sure about the differences in Chicken Boti, Chicken Tikka, or Chili Chicken. I can visually tell the difference, but when I have a menu with no picture I do not want to order wrong thing.

  1. Chicken Tikka

Chicken Tikka Masala originated in UK during 1950s. It was marinated chicken breast cooked like a Tandoori chicken and served with a tandoori tomato curry with lots of Degi Mirch as a dip.  The Tikka was too dry otherwise.

Masala was the bright red color dip. The Tikka was the red color skinless boneless chicken breast made like Tandoori Chicken

During 1980s the five star restaurants in Delhi added Chicken Tikka Masala to their menu on the demand by visiting British patrons. In India, Tikka and Kebab became interchangeable

    Chicken Boti

If you have rogan josh, it includes pieces of Mutton shank, both bone-in and boneless. The boneless piece of Mutton shank is called Boti.

Boti is a general term used for whole muscle meat from leg or shank area.

Chicken boti is the meat from thighs and drumsticks.

Unlike Chicken Tikka, Boti does not imply method of cooking. Chicken boti is normally used to make Balti chicken, or Chicken Jalfrezi

  2. In very basic terms: traditionally, Chicken Boti Kebab is made using the leg or thigh (dark) meat.  This is true for Lamb Boti Kebab also.  In contrast, Chicken Tikka Kebab uses breast (white) meat.

Now the spices are a whole other ball game, there are so many variations and combinations --- it is really dependent on the cook or chef.

Chili Chicken is generally an Indo (Desi) Chinese dish, similar to a stir fry.  Chili Chicken kebab is the same spices & marinade, just grilled in a tandoor.
