  1. One exists separate from all perceptions, the other can be tainted by them.

Is it true that the sun shines at night?

We did not know that it was until we learned more about reality.

One should never be satisfied with the truth if there is more to reality.

  2. Incidents, occurrences, phenomenas, values reproduced unadultered or undiluted can be defined as truth. But truth in course of time gets corrupted and may not be what it implies. So many a times truth is just myth and shear false hood which passes on as absolute truth.

On the other hand reality never gets affected by time, circumstance or any other factor. Reality is independent of beliefs, faiths, value systems or conditioning. So truth could be misleading and damaging but reality is not. While truth is difficult to verify and prove but reality is not. Truth is essentially a belief system where as reality is an instrument to discover truth.

    Exmp.

Truth - In a street fight Mike killed Bob.

Reality- Mike killed Bob while he was trying to save himself.

  3. I would say that reality is merely an experiential truth specific to the corresponding experience.... therefore, while the truth can also be ascertained through logic, the reality can only be subjectively experienced and not conceptualized or deduced. Thus all realities are not true..... only those are true that remain unchanged despite changing observers.

  4. Truth persuades by teaching, but does not teach by persuading.

Fiction reveals truths that reality obscures.

  5. Truth is a very subjective term. Who knows what truth is? Truth is reality. If I tell you my hair is blue, I'd be not telling the truth, therefore it's a lie. If it's a lie, it's not real.

What's real is truth, and what's truth is real, whether we like it or not.

Oh, and keep asking your stupid philosophy teacher "senseless" questions. I'm sure he's gonna be pissed, but philosophy means questions and answers, answers that could never be found.

  6. Truth is one, reality is how every one percieves it.

An instance: at a particular longitude, at a certain time, the sun is seen to rise, at another longitude, at the same time, the sun is overhead, and at still another longitude, the sun is setting. Now, the position of the sun is real for the observers at all three locations. But the sun neither sets nor rises. And the truth is not even that the sun is motionless on that account, for it orbits the centre of the Galaxy, and not even that is the truth, for the Galaxy, along with others, revolves around the centre of  the local supercluster, which, like millions of other superclusters, fly off from one another in the general expansion of the universe.

So truth does not depend on observation, and, by extension, on the senses in general, for any impressions and 'conclusions' will be only relative.

  7. People live their lives by what they accept as correct and true. That's how they define "Reality".

But what does it mean to be "correct" or "true?" Merely vague concepts...their "Reality" may all be a mirage.

Can we consider them to simply be living in their own world, shaped by their beliefs?

  8. As the wikipedia entry states, truth is 'an agreement with fact or reality in particular'.

Reality is however things actually are. Even without people thinking about how things actually are, things still actually are some 'way'.

When we make a claim of truth, we make a claim that the way be believe things actually are -- is the way things actually are. We strive for the set of truth and the set of reality to be in agreement.

So, even though the two words are often times used interchangeably, if we set out to be close in our thoughts to the ultimate nature of how things actually are, it might be slightly more ambitious to say that we would like to 'know' the ultimate reality. However, sadly, we probably can only hope for a 'closeness' to reality. That set of 'closeness' is what we often define as truth.

Edit: I disagree with noodles. Truth is what is subjective, not reality.

Noodles is using the term 'reality' where I would use the phrase 'world view'.

  9. Generally in philosophy truth and reality are two VERY different things.

My reality of particular things could be very different than yours.  Another question that arises from the concept of reality is how do you determine where your reality derives from?  Is it from your senses(i.e. sight, touch..) or does it come from what you are told is so? Additionally, if it comes from either of those are those particular things deceiving you in any way and if so does that in turn shape your new reality thereby, in essence making it actual reality?  Reality is hard to define because it is always changing from person to person, hence why humans fight and differ from one another so often.

Truth is just as complicated.  In philosophy there are very few thing that are called "actual" truths.  For instance, math is often regarded as a "T"ruth because it is constant and unchanging(however, I beg to differ.)  Math as an example, should show the difference between reality and Truth though.  Regardless of our realities 2+2 always equals 4, its a Truth.

As a side note, philosophy itself means love of wisdom, so a safe answer to you professor should be something along the lines of "philosophy is a way to gain wisdom and understanding so as to understand the world in which we live in better."

  10. I think it is the same. I see it like truth is reality. Ask this question your teacher and see what he tells you.  And then let me know... This is an interesting question.

    Both have their forms...

  11. welllll. I guess the truth can be applied to what is there, to what is reality. Or to what reality is believed to be, in saying this I guess one could say TRUTH CAN BE APPLIED TO A FALSE REALITY.

Reality is what governs eveything, truth is what shows what is there. I guess they're both pretty much the same but also not so much. Blegh, figure it out yourself my brain is tired of this question :)

  12. truth is constant

    reality changes

  13. Well that sorta happened to my friend as well and im so gonna say your right cuz i noe wat yuur saying ok...

    Hope this helped =]

  14. It is true that "truth" is not spelled "Turth". So sayeth the oracle (me!)

  15. In philosophy "truth" only applies to language.

Only statements can be true (or false).

"Reality" is that which makes a statement true (or false).
