  1. the Pentium 1, 2, 3, 4, core, core2 processors are different generations. Each one had a different socket size (the first generations had pins and even slots, where the current generation has little "balls"). The architecture and available commands are also different and more complex in the newer models.

In a very simplified example, pretend that the first generation Pentiums could only do addition and subtraction in one cycle. To do the math problem 2*4 would require 2+2+2+2, or four cycles. The newer ones were then implemented with "smarter" command sets which would allow them to complete 2*4 in one step. This is only an example, but it helps illustrate how the new available commands between generations allowed quicker processing.

The speed also increased from the order of about 75-150 MHz for the P1 to about 2000-3000 MHz for the current generation, so they are doing a lot smarter tasks at much quicker rates. Current processors are also 64-bit as compared to 32-bit (or even 16-bit before) and usually dual or even quad-core, meaning almost the same as having two or four processors where one used to be.

  2. difference in technology size of the circuits have decreased into the 45 nanometers where as the pentium 1 was probably more like inches

  3. Increasing performance (and heat generation). Larger and larger cache sizes (The P1 had no L2 cache of it's own, it was on the motherboard).
