  1. I have no idea of the 'carrot' content of the gold and whether that has to do with the colour but ...

WHITE GOLD ...looks more like silver, sometimes with a the tiniest hint of yellow - if any   [and is my favourite of the golds!].

It is more expensive than yellow gold.

YELLOW GOLD ....looks more like the original golden-yellow you see as nuggets or 'gold-bars' on TV shows.

  2. Pure gold, which is known as fine gold, is too soft to be of much use to the jeweller since it would wear away too quickly. The jeweller must therefore alloy gold with other metals to produce a harder metal known as a Karat gold alloy.

Now when pure gold is alloyed with nickel, palladium etc then it turns into white gold .

when yellow gold is alloyed with copper and little of silver ( may be) then it retain its yellow -reddish colour and this alloy is popularly used in gold jewelery.

Remember there are various alloys used in jewelry to get the desired colour of gold. ( like yellow, rose, pink etc)

  3. Gold is really soft, so it needs to be alloyed with other metals to maintain it's shape.

Pure gold (24 karat) is just that.

Regular yellow gold is often alloyed with a small amount of copper or silver.  This ranges from 8 karat up to 22 karat.

White gold is mixed with nickel or palladium, or occasionally manganese.

  4. it is different metals in the gold that give it that hue.
