What is different b/w application software and development software?

Application software is the one which performs some work for the user. for example, media player is an application software that can play a song for you. this application will use lot of system softwares and codecs to perform this job, as a user u wont come to know what it actually does, it is the top most layer in any software stack which interacts with the user.

I dint understand what do you mean by development software.. did u mean system software? if it is so, then, system software is the software that makes your system (computer) to run. for example, operating system is a system software. or a driver(can be USB driver, DVD ROM driver, display driver, sound driver etc) is a system software.

Application software is a collection of applications and do some specific task. By executing this applications we give some input parameters or information.

And when you click OK or save the information, then that information stored in to data base.And when ever you require information you can search the database by executing the application or applications.

Here application is the interface between end user and database.

Examples: C,C++,Java, VB etc are Application softwares

and SAP, PeopleSoft are ERP application softwares.

Even in Railway/Bus reservation counters, Air ticket booking, and Banks also use some application software to computerise their business.

Development software is the base software for creating or developing the application software.

Examples:Borland C, UNIX etc

Software development is the developmenet stage before implementing the application software.For any software implementations, first they they do some development process. In this process they do detailed study of  client`s business and current system and then they modify existing applications or design new applications according to the client`s requirements.

After development stage they do testing applications with client`s data.if results are satisfactory and up to the expectations then they go for live implementation or process.
