  1. rivet joint is only held by the rivets, not strong welding joint its the two metals becoming one and if done right the weld is stronger then the metal your welding

  2. why does every idot on Answers feel like answering things they dont understand??

riveting is stronger that welding. there are several types of welding and each ones characteristics can vary widely. when a joint is welded, impurities can be introduced making the weld weak. the main problem is the heat. large amounts of heat destroy the metals temper. this makes a big problem, because the act of welding the metal, lowers the quality of the metal. when your metal is c**p, who care how strong the connection is? welds are usaly done at the edges of of two metals so only one weld can be made. rivets allow you to overlap two metals. then just add as many rows of rivets as needed to get the desired strength. which is stronger 1 weld on weakened steel or 6 rows of rivets in high strength steel?

have you ever flown? if you have, you will notice the entire plane is covered in rivets. fighter jet, skyscrapers and bridges- all riveted and bolted together. welding does have its uses, and there are lots of them, but it is not as strong as rivets. there is a new style of welding called friction stir welding. it is  not perfected, but i suspect when they get it right, it could be just as strong as rivets.
