What is different from American Archaeology and European Archaeology?

  1. American archaeology is considered a branch of anthropology.  We try to learn about past cultures and about humans in general through archaeology.

    European archaeology is generally done with a historical or "classics" perspective.  They're looking for data to fill history books, and their focus is more on monumental buildings than on everyday life.

    However, this distinction is blurring over time.  More and more Europeans are taking an anthropological approach to archaelogy.


  2. Probably the location.  American Archaeology deals with locations in America (Paleoindians, mastadons, etc.) while European archeology deals with their locations like Lascaux, Neaderthals, etc).  Both very interesting.
