  1. The schrader valve is the same as the one found on automobile tires. The presta valve is thinner and has a s***w on the top. To fill a schrader valve, the pump has to depress the valve pin. To fill a presta valve, you unscrew but do *NOT* remove the s***w valve at the top. Tighten the s***w again when you are finished inflating the tire.

You must use the valve type that matches your rim. A Schrader valve is too large to fit through the valve stem hole on a presta rim. A presta valve stem will fit through a schrader valve stem hole, but the extra rubber will wear down quickly and cause a flat.

Presta valves are thinner and lighter. They are also better at holding the high pressures typical for road tires.

  2. Just as a matter of interest, if you need to pump up the tyres fitted with a presta valve, it's as well to depress the valve core for a split second in order to break the contact with the valve stem.

  3. Both the Scrader and the presta valve work in the same way where the internal pressure inside the tube pushes a seal closed. the air is let out by pressing the small central rod to break the seal.  The presta valve has a locknut which prevents the rod being pressed inadvertently.

The Schrader valve is used in lower pressure applications on for example motor vehicles tyres and lower pressure bicycle tyres up to about 4 bars(60psi).  The presta valve is used in the higher pressure tubes of road bikes where pressures over(7bar) 100psi are often used.
