if by "yeard" you mean "yard" then I would logically assume that 400 yards is the distance around a 400 yard track =)

Typically there are no 400 yard tracks.  They are either 400 meters or 440 yards.

Most tracks at the high school and above levels are 400 meters.  What is confusing is that the tracks are metric, but we use the english units.  For example a runner runner the 400 meter is called a quarter miler, when in fact you are running 437.2 yards.  A mile is actually 1609 meters.
