  1. Clinical psychologists undergo many hours of graduate training—usually 4 to 6 years post-Bachelors—in order to gain demonstrable competence and experience. About half of all clinical psychology graduate students are being trained in Ph.D. programs—a model that emphasizes research and is usually housed in universities—with the other half in Psy.D. programs, which has more focus on practice (similar to professional degrees for medicine and law).[19] Both models are accredited by the American Psychological Association[22] and many other English-speaking psychological societies. A smaller number of schools offer accredited programs in clinical psychology resulting in a Masters degree, which usually take 2 to 3 years post-bachelors.

The practice of clinical psychology requires a license in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and many other countries. Although each of the U.S. states is somewhat different in terms of requirements and licenses, there are three common elements:[24]

           1. Graduation from an accredited school with the appropriate degree

           2. Completion of supervised clinical experience

           3. Passing a written examination and, in some states, an oral examination

All U.S. state and Canada province licensing boards are members of the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) which created and maintains the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP). Many states require other examinations in addition to the EPPP, such as a jurisprudence (i.e. mental health law) examination and/or an oral examination.[24] Most states also require a certain number of continuing education credits per year in order to renew a license, which can be obtained though various means, such as taking audited classes and attending approved workshops. Clinical psychologists require the Psychologist license to practice, although similar licenses can be obtained with a masters-level degree, such as Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and Licensed Psychological Associate (LPA).

  2. He's a psychologist....or life strategist.

Ask your school or career counselor what you should take in order to become a counselor for those who are troubled, also known as a social worker.  You will have to take psychology, sociology, and possibly other mental health courses to learn how the mind works to include caring for the mentally ill...if that's the route you wish to take.  Good Luck!

  3. i would look into "Dr" Phil's qualifications, i don't think he's even a real doctor, it's a tittle like Dr Dre

  4. hes a clincal psychologist, i belive he use to specialize in heath psychology and consultation.

The licensing for psychologist varies, but normally you must obtain a doctorate. Then take a predoctoral internship and pass a qualifin exam.

I would major in psychology as an undergrad, then either apply for a masters program or do a "fast track" doctoral program where you are accepted at the bachelors level. Be careful on your course work as an undergrad, some schools require specific courses that you must have. Some courses you will take would be statistics, courses in research, psychopathology, child development, biopsychology, etc. Most universities and colleges has undergrad programs in psychology.

To obtain license you must graduate from an APA accrediated school *american psychology association*. There are NUMEROUS fields of psychology some requires licenses others dont. You have fields such as clinical, counseling, school, educational etc. that requires licenses. Then you have the experimental fields like developmental, social, cognitive, neuroscience, etc.

In the field of clinical you also have different specializies such as child clinical, neuropsychology, health psychology that you normally major in clinical psychology with either an emphasis or minor in the field. Or you just major in psychology and do a residency or fellowship in the speciality. A residency or fellowship are post doctoral on the job trainings that you get paid a small stippen for your work. You train under specialists in your desired field.

For right now try to find a mental health facility such as a psychologist, counselor, etc and volunteer, see whats its like.. Interview local psychologists, psychology professors at near by universities.

  5. Dr. Phil is a psychologist although he now thinks he is an expert on nearly everything.
