  1. Dry downing is when water enters the lungs which later reacts and causes choking and difficulty breathing. This can happen while swimming, drinking a glass of water, taking a bath...basically anything where you could get water in the lungs. It is possible to drown on a teaspoon of water.

It has the same effect has drowning in water, but the victim in not in water at the time.

  2. Dry drowning is when a person's lungs become unable to extract oxygen from the air, due primarily to:

    Muscular paralysis

Puncture wound to the torso (affecting ability of diaphragm to create respiratory movement)

    Changes to the oxygen-absorbing tissues

Persistence of laryngospasm when immersed in fluid

Breathing any gas other than oxygen, that does not kill the patient on its own, for too long. (e.g. Helium)

The person may effectively drown without any sort of fluid. In cases of dry drowning in which the victim was immersed, very little fluid is aspirated into the lungs. The laryngospasm reflex essentially causes asphyxiation and neurogenic pulmonary oedema.

Dry drowning can occur clinically, or due to illness or accident, or be deliberately (and repeatedly) induced in torture (waterboarding). It can be traumatizing, and it can be deadly.

  3. It usually occurs after a person has been in water (whether it be a pool or even a bathtub) and they suck in some water. After the exit the pool they later have problems oxygenating their body, and if it's not caught early enough the patient will die. The three major symptoms include struggling to breathe, extreme tiredness, and change in normal behavior. If this is caught early enough, the patient can be intubated until their lungs heal and are able to function on their own.
