i mean, what is the dvr that doesnt come with satelite like dish network or direct tv.

Think of a DVR as a digital VCR without tapes. Instead of recording to tapes it records the shows to a Hard Drive. You can pause and rewind live TV, have it record all of your favorite shows and more.

Cable and Satellite companies offer DVR's with their services, but they are unable to match the quality of Tivo DVR's. Tivo DVR's also allow you to donwload movies and TV shows from Amazon Unbox, your computer and more.

You can also use a computer with a TV card to do the same DVR functions using Windows Media Center or software like MythTV. Using a computer requires a more advanced level of technical knowledge, Tivo is very easy to install and setup.
