can anyone explain to me what dynaLight technology is and how it works ? I was looking at a Toshiba LCD 42" today and even when I look it up on the net it does not give a contrast ratio, all it says is DynaLIght technology for blacks and deep colors . what does this mean ? how can I rate this in comparison to contrast ratio ?

  1. I dont think it has anything to do with contrast ratio. It just makes the picture look alot better and clearer. I have a 37" Toshiba Regza with dynalight. Im sure theres somewhere online where you can see the same TV you were looking at and give all the specifictions and contrast ratio.

  2. If I remember correctly, DynaLight is Toshiba's term for local dimming of the back light in dark areas.

Most LCDs now will dim the (full area) backlight for dark scenes and fade-outs so as to overcome the limited contrast ratio of LCD displays.   (Lack of a good black level is most noticeable when the screen is mostly black.)  Unfortunately, that also dims any bright portions of the picture that may be there.  It also doesn't do anything to darken the dark parts of normal pictures.

Using LED backlight technology, it is possible to reduce the backlight just in those areas of the picture that are dark, leaving the bright areas alone.   This really does increase the contrast of the picture.  That is what DynaLight does.

This does not prevent the TV manufacturer for specifying a contrast ratio, and the spec would be more meaningful than the "dynamic contrast" now used to spec LCD sets.  There may be some reviews that give that spec., but I would expect it to outperform most TV without local backlight dimming.
