What is eating my spring onions?

Question

I have grown spring onions from seed and have now transfered them out into the bed. Something is eating them from the root up. I've pulled out three that the green tops were dying and the roots have gone and so has half bulb. Anyone have any ideas what it could be? They probably would've only needed a few more weeks until i'd have been eating them!!

I planted the sets and they were beautiful...suddenly started disappearing when they were just getting big enough to pull. I believe my problem is a gopher...could yours be the same?
