  1. Ecological succession consists of the succession of organisms within a given area. For example on a Sand dune.The sand dune is made up of the:

    1.Embryo Dune.

    2.Fore Dune.

    3.Main Dune.

    4.Grey Dune.

    On each dune there are plant successions:

    1.Embryo Dune = Sea Couch

    2.Fore Dune = Marram Grass

    3.Main Dune = Gorse

    4.Grey Dune = Pine and Birch

    You can see how the species of plants change as their distance increases form the sea.

    Note: The sand dune itself is an ecological succession.
