Edmonton is located in the Canadian high prairies.  It is almost in the geographic centre of Alberta and is underlain by mudstone and sandstones.  It is bisected by the North Saskatchewan River which created a large river valley and separates north Edmonton and South Edmonton.

Edmonton is located on the lakebed of Glacial Lake Edmonton ans such there is plenty of lacustrine sediments  For the most part this has made the Edmonton area flat, however there is some rough topography due to the underlying topography.  When the climate warmed sand dunes were formed, some of which are still visible.
