In an ideal world, helping to 'shine a light' on ignorance and providing skills in free, logical, creative thought. In reality, occasionally indoctrinating people in very set and limited ways of thinking. In certain circumstances, encouraging bigotry and hatred.

It can be a number of things really! I think the best education is giving someone the skills to further educate themselves and instill a desire in them to do so!

Imparting what you know and can find out to the benefit of another or if you are talking about formal education a pot luck of what I just described (take into account that some teachers know less than you think) and semi-incarceration of talented youth for the benefit of no one (well teachers get some dosh).

I'm all for home education as this is a right (what your parents don't know, they can find out for you).
