I never studied Latin, but when I was at school was told that the word Education came from the Latin root, something like Educare, which means to 'bring out'.  It seemed to me then a good definition of teaching - bringing out the possibilities within, and approx 50 years further on, i think I still agree with the impression I had then.  I think our sats orientated learning in the UK is tantamount to 'stuffing in' at the moment!  When I first taught I was most impressed with John Holt's two books 'How Children Learn' and How children fail.  they fail by constantly being weighed up and feeling thay are lacking and they learn with that 'bringing out' approach which engenders pride and feelings of success.

I suppose it depends on who you ask.  To me, obtaining and education is gathering knowledge needed to be a productive citizen and live up to your dreams.
