What is email ,is it a kind of paint ?

I remember when I was a child my mom's kitchen utensil ussualy made from iron coated with something called email (I hope i don't mistaken spelling it)

I want to know what is email made from ?

If it is paint then why called email ?

  1. Enamel is the proper word ...

    Its a thicker coat of paint that was and is very durable indeed..

    I still have some of my mothers utensils which are enamelled..

    Enamel paint, as used on cabinets, trimwork, etc, is a fanciful and innacurate use of the term "enamel", intended to imply that the paint has gloss and durability characteristics similar to real vitreous enamel
