What is everyone's opinion on rugby?

Rugby, as i've found out, is one of the most fun sports i have ever played since grade school bball. I've played high school football, played high school basketball and i've run high school track and never have i had as much fun in these sports as i've had in rugby. It just seems to me that Americans see rugby as an awkward football (and i'm not going to be philosopher and preach to you that rugby was before football because it's already common knowledge). I believe that if more Americans would at least give it a try, the USA Rugby team wouldn't be such a struggle-some bunch. If you look at New Zealand and you see their rugby team ( The All-Blacks) it's a marvelous sight. New Zealand is an Island off of Australia and has a population of just over 4 million people. They have the best rugby team in the world. In America, we just broke over 300,000 million people and we struggle hard. If more people would try it, i think America could have a new obsession. How do you guys feel about this?

  1. I like rugby very much. However I would like to see them streamline the rules a little to make it more accessible, and to rely on the boring slow forwards less.

  2. I played football in high school and then joined the rugby club at my university. All though they both have their mereits, I think I would have to go with rugby. It is just such a great team sport. I think what drives many people away is how complicated it is. YOu can't just watch and enjoy it if you don't know the rules.

  3. Yeah, wise there Big fella, NZ is NZ. Full stop.

It's a great game, more entertaining than fat men in spandex football, or soccer, or even cricket.

But sometimes it's best to stick to your own game.. I doubt that the world would take America seriously if they attempted to give a try in rugby. Pre-concieved notions and whatnot.

    And it's the All Blacks.

  4. New Zealand develops and picks from  the strongest, quickest, and most physically powerful nations on Earth.

Fiji Tonga and Samoa and the NZ Moaris.

Any 15 men Amerca can muster will simply be unable to compete.

  5. Best game in the world...

Most skillfull, powerful players in the world

  6. It's ok

  7. I love rugby, it's one of the better sports that there is in this world of ours.  The respect that the players show to the officials is superb, which is a far cry from how footballers (soccer) treat their officials.   Over here in the UK the Six Nations is being played out and we have three matches to watch over the weekend which is going to be superb!  I totally agree with you about the Haka, and if the All Blacks are playing I always make sure that I don't miss it.

  8. Rugby union is good, rugby league sucks big time.

    C'mon Munster!

    .

  9. Rugby Union, a wonderful game. Watch England beat Italy tommorow in the 6 nations!

  10. Rugby is perhaps the best contact team sport in the world particularly when played well.

USA has the potential in physical structure  and population numbers but would need a number of generations of skill and learning development before it would truly be competitive.   Focusing on producing an awesome 7s rugby team - whihc is very reliant on speed and is a fantastically interesting game would be a good start.

By the way New Zealand is a country of its own, no connection to Australia,  consisting of two main islands - North and South and a small island (Stewart).  It is not part of Australia nor just off Australia - its further from Australia than Hawaii from LA.  Be careful when talking to a New Zealander not to associate them with Australia - they are hugely patriotic and independent people and they might take offence ... its a  little like calling a Canadian a yank or vice versa.

New Zealanders are also a very big strong race with much polynesian gene influence - they are physically big enough and fast enough to compete on scale with the best NFL players

  11. I love rugby.  it's the most fun i've ever had in my life period end of story.  I think that if America could pick up rugby, and take it seriously, we'd rapidly become a dominate force.  However, as long as American football is on top, and the US doesn't compete in any serious competitions, and lacks a strong infrastructure, we'll still be a 3rd tier nation.  I agree though, NZ is the size and population of colorado, we have more resources but lack the will

  12. I honestly never knew of Rugby until I saw the character in "American Pie" play the sport.  It seems like people who like football would like rugby. And just the name rugby sounds cool!
