Michelangelo Buonarroti 1475-1564 was also a poet.  Some of his most famous works were David, The Sistine Ceiling, Dome of St. Peters, and the Pieta.  He was paid when, as a teenager, he was apprenticed to painter, Ghirlandaio.  That was unusual for anyone so young.  Other artists were hired to paint clothing on Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling frescoes after he died, but some painters made sure their painting could be removed, because the Sistine paintings were considered masterpieces.  The ceiling was cleaned in 1993 of the soot from heaters and candles.  There was some controversy, because the colors were so much more beautiful than anyone in the 20th century had thought.  They were so used to the soot covered dull colors.  Of course, no one alive had ever seen what it looked like when it was first painted.
