  1. Sales sell the product. Marketing makes the sales possible on first time and repeat sales to the same customer. Marketing makes the product known and greatly reduces the work of the salesmen if they don't have to do the marketing too. Sales basically collects the money from the customer. Marketing goes after and gets the customer to the looking stage or in the front door. Sales and marketing usually go hand in hand. Lately though, retail businesses depend on marketing to bring the customer in and the customer selects prepackaged goods and uses self-serve aisles that cuts out the sales force that runs the cash register and collects the money. Eventually all sales will probably be self serve. The gas service stations were the pioneers in self serving customers that let marketing((large price signs) do the drawing in of the customers. Credit cards empower nearly all businesses to do this.
