an exhaust leak is a leak that can occur anywhere from the cylinder, any of the connection points of the exhaust pipe, catalytic converter or muffler or a hole in any of the above.

If your car has some sort of check engine light (on the dashboard usually a yellow warning light) you can go to pep boys or any auto store like that and they can hookup a hand held device that will read the codes and they do this for free.

Exhaust leaks are usually inexpensive to fix unless its in the engine somewhere which can be more problematic.

There are exhaust/muffler shops that specifically focus on these kinds of issues.  If you have any doubts, you should go to one or two of these and get quotes.  Be sure to ask specifically what is wrong and get a written estimate for the repair.  Hopefully they diagnose the same problem.

Exhaust/muffler shops can weld and do minor metal fabrication.  Regular mechanics usually are unable to do this so what might be a quick fix for a exhaust muffler shop with a simple patch via a weld a regular mechanic would probably suggest replacing the component which takes more time.
