  1. The usual term is "hyper-Calvinist".

Their belief is that since salvation comes from and through the Holy Spirit, it is wrong to encourage people to repent and believe, since they are powerless to do so, of themselves.

I guess you could say they won't be handing out gospel tracts or knocking on doors.

  2. No. It just means they believe in the doctrines of predestination and election instead of the "anyone who will believe" doctrine.

Most all Baptists are Calvinist- just not extreme (or 5 point). Baptist are the masters at evangelicalism.

All Presbyterian and Reformed churches are Calvanists. Though not al are 5 point.

    See "tulip theology"

  3. John Calvin's international influence on the development of the doctrines of the Protestant Reformation began at the age of 25, when he started work on his first edition of the Institutes of the Christian Religion in 1534 (published 1536). This work underwent a number of revisions in his lifetime, including an impressive French vernacular translation. The Institutes together with Calvin's polemical and pastoral works, his contributions to confessional documents for use in churches, and his massive out-pouring of commentary on the Bible, Calvin had a direct personal influence on Protestantism. He is only one of many to influence the doctrines of the Reformed churches, though he eventually became the most prominent.

There are 5 tenets to Calvinism which can be defined under the acronym TULIP:

    Total depravity

    Unconditional election

    Limited Atonement

    Irresistible grace

    Perseverance of the saints

    for more see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvinism

Contrary to Calvin, Jacobus Arminius influenced a different movement which is certainly more prevalent in the Methodist church whereas Calvinism exists more in the Baptist church. Arminius had four differing views to Calvin (agreeing only with Total depravity):

    Election is conditional on faith

    Grace is resistible

    Atonement is complete

Perseverance in faith (the conditional aspect of election)

You can read more on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arminianism

The summary is that both Arminius and Calvin were Christians and did believe in a statement of faith that included Jesus as part of the trinitarian God. Calvinism is not a sect of Christianity although Calvin's views are taught more in some churches while Arminius' view are taught in others.

Many free churches believe something that is middle of the road between Calvin and Arminius in that whilst God chooses, man must respond and whilst the saving nature of grace is irresistible, this is only to those who have chosen God. Predestination and free-will hold a delicate balance and it is a subject that many books have been written on - it is not something that can be dealt with in a response to a question on Y!A.

Hope this summary has been helpful though. God bless!

  4. An extreme Calvinist is someone who believes strictly in John Calvin's 5 points, known by the acronym TULIP.

T -- total depravity. This doesn't mean people are as bad as they can be. It means that sin is in every part of one's being, including the mind and will, so that a man cannot save himself.

U -- unconditional election. God chooses to save people unconditionally; that is, they are not chosen on the basis of their own merit.

L -- limited atonement. The sacrifice of Christ on the cross was for the purpose of saving the elect.

I -- irresistible grace. When God has chosen to save someone, He will.

P -- perseverance of the saints. Those people God chooses cannot lose their salvation; they will continue to believe. If they fall away, it will be only for a time.

  5. Yes, I can see it now.  Presbyterian suicide bombers demanding that the civilized world accept sola fide.

    Small group, non volent.

It is terrorist in the sense that extreme-football was a bunch of linebackers charging into public places with bombs.
